Being worth to know about the Menck-KRA:
The shovel was taken into operation with the Dyckerhoff Cement Works Ltd Amöneburg (near Wiesbaden) in july 1927. It was designed on request of this company, because of the difficult quarrying situation in the opencast mine. The production management aspired to quarry the raw material, which consisted mainly of lime-marl, without blasting from the working faces and to prepare it in a “mixer field” for the later loading. Therefore the shovel was equipted with a very high biting force and a long jib (bucket capacity 5 cbm). Due to the difficult soil condition, the under-carriage had four caterpillars, which were driven independently from each other by a cardan shaft. Corresponding to the technical level of development in 1927, the shovel was driven by lever and oil switches. Although the control of the brake current caused problems in these days and therefore the drive of the hoisting gear was switched by two mechanically coupled electric motors, which were placed right-angled to the gear and acted by a bevel wheel drive on to the hoisting gear. From 1927 until 1955 75 % of the mining was turned round by the KRA, that were 18750000 to. Since 1956 the KRA was used in the overburden where it digged at a quarry face of 16 meters height. Here its performance until the 31.12.1966 was roughly 10450308 cbm. The shovel was in operation until 1969.
